History of TBSP

[ Remember the times? ]

For over 60 years, Kullman’s Bakery served its confectionery treats out of Mt. Oliver Borough. Kullman’s represented the thriving business district that was central to the community’s identity. However, despite its success, the bakery closed its doors in 2013 leaving behind a community, its memories, and a hankering for sweets.

Two years later in the summer of 2015, Economic Development South hosted a three part event called Sweet Saturdays. Here, community bakers came together to sell their baked goods along Brownsville Road—with the last taking place in the historic Kullman’s Bakery. The success of these events could not be denied; something greater, more permanent had to be done.

Out of Sweet Saturday came The Bakery Society Pittsburgh (TBSP). A collaboration of regional partners, this new bakery occupies the same Kullman’s space and continues the tradition of baked goods in Mt. Oliver. Even more though, The Bakery Society Pittsburgh invites the community to participate in this new nonprofit business, especially through its incubator program.
